Day 1 Sunday 23 Feb

Day 1 Sunday 23 Feb

Take off to Kota Kinabalu
Okie, finally I start to blog on the beginning of the trip, after a long introduction. Meanwhile you can take a look my bro Aaron's blog on the trip.

The eight of us, separated into 2 groups boarded our booked cabs @ 4.15am at Woodlands MRT and Ang Mo Kio MRT. In the Woodlands cab were Audrey the SME from MOE, Jeremy from 9.38 Live aka my shifu, Prema the only Indian and me the Blogger. In the other cab were Aaron the PR Man, Grace the Ballerina, Kelvin the Quiet one and Mel the Potato.

We passed the customs and reached the bus terminal, where 2 Malaysia cabs were already waiting for our arrivals. My cab reached the terminal first and then the other cab. I remember that everyone was excited and happy when the 8 of us gathered. I thought things like "Yeah", "Finally" and "We are beginning our adventure!". We were so engrossed in talking that I noticed the Malaysia cabbies were impatient and restless.

From there, we travelled for about 45 mins to reach Senai Airport. I remember the journey on the way to Senai Airport was errie. JB was a like ghost town, not much street lights, very few cars and not a single human was sighted in the streets.

We checked in almost immediately when we reached the airport and then while waiting for our flight, we had some food and played daidee at Mary Brown.

The flight was about 2 hours long and the process at boths airports were smooth. Upon arrival we picked up some the precious map. We purchased 2 taxi tickets @ RM20 each from the airport counter and took the taxis to the Kota Kinabalu Central Business District, where we had our first overnight.

About KK

Kota Kinabalu Central Business District is a vibrant and laid-back town that occupies a small area. It is very easy to get around by taxis or your own legs. Hotels, backpackers lodges, shopping places, street-markets are easy to come by. The cost of a taxi ride is very affordable, as any destinations within the CBD is just a flat rate of RM7. Booking of taxi at hotel receptions is free.

It is very safe to walk alone in the day. I would suggest you to bring sunglass, as it is very sunny. Sun block may not be necessary, unless you are visiting Tunku Abdul Rahman Park.

The population consist mainly the indigenous people, Malays, Chinese and I saw only one Indian hehehe throughout. You would come in frequent contacts with the indigenous and Malays. Most of them would prefer to converse in Bahasa Melayu, as they can't speak English well . Basic Bahasa Melayu peppered with some English words would be very useful throughout the holiday.

The Attractions

Want to see beautiful sunsets? Do make visits to the coastal area in the evening where South China Sea is. It is also when the local people at the Wet Market start to setup their business stalls.

Many things like food and souveniers are over priced, so make sure you bargain before making any purchase. Handicrafts are the main selling as souveniers for tourists and they are mainly found at Handicraft Market. Funnily, some of the handicrafts can be found in Phuket, which sells them at a much lower price.

Seafood there is plentiful and is found at Wet Market and Evening Food Stall. Again, make sure you bargain when buying the yummy seafood. Seafood at the Wet Market are fresh and bbq on the spot, but are over priced. Someone tried to sell me a simple-made fish for RM40!

There are a few shopping centres there, but Centre Point was the shopping centre that we visited the most. There are many shops located in there like, hair salons, Giordano, Nike, Mcdonalds, BK, super market, apparel departments, handphone shops, photo shops, money changers and an internet cafe. Do remember to log out any applications after using the internet.

There are many attractions listed on the map, but we didn't have enough time to explore all of them. Some of the attractions we visited were Handicraft Market, Central Market, Wet Market, Pulau Manukan and Sunday Market.

Finally I'm back to continue this blog... My apologies for this long long long M.I.A. This time i have added KKKakis' theme song, Underneath It All. Read On!

Roaming The Town

We check-in at our first accommodation place, Step In Lodge that is located along Jalan Datuk Chong Thian Vun. FYI, KKKakis lived in different accommodation place every day. We had a rich life in KK haha... Step In Lodge isn't a bad place to be put up at. Breakfast is provided every morning and it has all the facilities that you will need. The surplus would be the internet terminal that you just pay cheaply to use and the security implemented doors. The only complaint we all had, was the damn water supply! The landlord very stingy lor... The current of the water was so weak that I need 20 minutes to wash the shampoo of my hair!

We had 2 dormitory air-con rooms that have 4 beds each. Just nice for the 8 of us, 4 ladies and 4 gentlemen. The ladies got their rooms first, as the gentleman's room wasn't ready till 1 hour later. So for the time being, we put our big backpacks at the ladies' room and we had our first meal of the day at a coffeeshop, which is just a pebble's throw away. I like the setting at the coffeeshop, as it was the first time the KKKakis had their first meal together and thinking back, that simple round dining table seems to have a meaning for us. All of us had tom yum noodle that tasted more like to laksa to me, except Prema who had chicken rice that tasted like chicken rice you find in Singapore. Poor choice Prema~ Hahahaaha!

An hour or more later, we went back to our lodge. We changed into our comfy clothes, style our hairs, contact lenses on and gave answers to nature calls. As for the 2 sleep sisters, Prema and Audrey, would be sleep... zzzZZZzz...

The rest of KKKakis greeted good night to the sleep buddies and off we roamed the town of KK! There was no thought of work in Singapore and it was carefree and relaxed again... WEEEEEE! For the first part, we wondered aimlessy from the area around our lodge to KK Plaza, cam whored at the pier, window shopped at Handicraft market and Central Market. Look out for the preserved frog's skin purse at Handicraft Market. I find it hard to digest my digestive juice at the first sight.

We cam whored ourselves throughout. I like the part when we took pics at the pier. At mid-afternoon, we chilled out at a cafe in KK Plaza and that was where we heard the song “Underneath It All”. It was this phrase “um um um Underneath it all” that made us caught on it. We had some laughter over some statements and jokes and the most memorable one would be “orh leng joo”.

After the chill out, the sleep sistas woke up and walked to join us and so the KKKakis were together again, together this special group 8 people walked towards the direction of Signal Hill. We scaled the overhead bridge at KK Plaza and cam-whored at the fountain of Tugu Peringatan Malaysia (Malaysia Memorial Monument). We wanted to go up to the Signal Hill Observatory to catch the sunset, but looking at the map we thought it would take half of our lives to reach there. We made an enquiry at the police station situated along Jalan Balai Polis and the Cikgu Police told us there isn't a shortcut to there. And so we decided to play some games at Merdeka Field.

It was crazy... weren't KKKakis supposed to conserve energy for conquer Mount KK? They didn't care and KKKakis had lot of fun playing at the field, which has a signboard that says a permit is needed to use it.

Firstly it was Frisbee and first of the first, it was a 4 vs 4 match. I can't remember well who was in which team, but I think it was Aaron, Audrey, Grace and Kelvin vs Jeremy, Mel, Prema and me.

Secondly of the firstly and also the lastly of the firstly, was match between the handsomes and the yandaos, as Aaron and Kelvin pitted against Jeremy and me. As for the ladies, they were at the side cheering for us and oogling at us (the blogger disclaim and has no responsibility over this information). Secondly, which comes after firstly, was a walking competition between Aaron and Prema. The rest of us were seated at the side enjoyed seeing how Aaron outwitted Prema, even as she was given a good 30 metres head start. Lastly, which comes after secondly that comes after firstly, we had yoga sessions haha.

We had our first part of dinner the Wet Market. The lovebirds (Grace and Kelvin) decided to have their own dinner at Kenny Rogers in Centre Point. We visited the Handicraft Market on our way, as we show Prema and Audrey the frog skin pouch. Prema was also looking to buy the tongkat ali cup for her friend, but it was not sold.

When we arrived at the Wet Market, there were food stalls already set up, while some are in the process of it. These food stalls operators make their catches at the nearby South China Sea in the day and sell them in the evening. The Sea creatures such as fishes, prawns, crabs and squids are bbq in the open and then displayed for sale. If i remember correctly, we bought 1 fish, 1 squid and 2 giant prawns. Although they were cooked without any seasoning, they were tasty. Do remember to bargain with the stall operators, as they sell the food at a cut-throat price.

After our food tasting at the Wet Market, we strolled to Center Point, to meet the couple at Kenny Rogers for our real dinner. Within minutes I sat in this restaurant, I began to stone... The lethargic effect started to kick in... I stoned, as I ate the chicken thigh...

We made a last minute shopping for our items. We bought mineral waters and additional batteries for our headlamps from the supermarkets and some socks. There are many cheap salons in the shopping mall and I was very tempted to dye my hair. Jeremy then suggested for us to go into the arcade and we pitted each other in Daytona.

Photobucket

It was after 10pm when we got back to our lodge. We prepared our stuff and did some planning for the next day. We would be embarking on our ascent on Mount KK the next day. I still remember the toruring experience at the stupid lodge.

Well its was a very pleasant first day into the trip anyway~ Good night my friends....

updated on 13 May: I stop here for now.. haiz.. the first day isn't completed yet. Pictures and videos would be uploaded another time. I be back!

The Journey of KKKakis

Foreword

Finally I make myself blog my holiday experience in Kota Kinabalu and Mount Kinabalu expedition. I have been busy with my camp work ever since I returned on 29 Feb.

I actually wrote mini diaries in my tiny notepad during the trip and then hope to record them electronically, but was forced to delay it till now. Some chunks of information are remembered and not written down. So I hope my information on my holiday is as accurate as possible and possibly provide useful information to people intending this same holiday in the future.

I have only good words to describe this holiday, even as the most torturing period, became one of the sweetest moment. I have fond memories that will definitely grow old with me and I can imagine myself telling my future children and grand children them.

I also have only good words for my fellow 7 KKKakis, namely Aaron, Audrey, Grace, Jeremy, Kelvin, Melissa and Prema. I will remember how the 8 of us got together and how we all made this trip happened with beautiful memories. I only wish for more to come from us in the future.

Pre-Holiday

About KKKakis

We had been communicating together month in month out, week in week out and day in day out via email, sms and phone since October 07, as we tried to confirm details and also sometimes, because of boredom at work. In all, we amassed over 400 emails, which I still keep them in the inbox.

We were all hoping for time to fly. However I did feel that time between October and 29 Feb flew... flew real slowly...

We met up a few times to train. Please look at the blogs on our trainings.

When I told my relatives and friends that I would be going to climb Mount Kinabalu, I would always have the same kind of conversations with them:

R&F: “Who are you going with?”

Me: “My friend and his friend and that friend's friend.”

And then, it was always the same question that followed up.

R&F: “How many girls and guys?”

And I gave the reply with a grin: “4 girls and 4 guys.”

And then they always go: “WAH...”

Before this trip , I wondered if there would be any love sparks between some people and then “BOOM!” there you are... Kelvin and Grace were "underground dating", until that someone exposed them lo~ Kekeke~

Mummy's worries

My mother was very worried about me going this trip. As I was packing my backpack 2 days before the trip, she asked me many questions about the trip from A-Z and then Z-A. To be honest, I felt headache and got tired of answering her queries. However at the end of day, I know that she always cares alot for me. I actually saw tears welling up in her eyes when she and Dad sent me to meet up with some KKKakis at Woodlands.

Here's my pledge to my worried mother.

“I promise I be very careful at the mountain.
I promise I won't be a hero at the mountain.
I promise that I won't use vulgarities in the mountain.”

My father was very cool and just said: “ Enjoy your trip ah.”

And here's my conversation with my idiotic sister.

I.Sis: “Huh you go mountain climbing ah?”

Me: “Yah.”

I.Sis: “I also want to go!”

Me: “You go and save up money first!”

Nonetheless, I still love my sister lo~ but she's really idiotic lah! Muahaha!

Flights and Accomodations

We booked our flights and accomodations between late November and early December via online.

We chose AirAsia, because it was alot cheaper than the other airlines like SilkAir. We booked the earliest flight on 23 Feb @ 0725hrs and it cost only about S$105, compared to SilkAir, which was at a cut-throat price for a 2 hours flight at above S$300.

However, we had to travel to Senai Airport in Johor, but no fear, as we got a ourselves two specially arranged taxis packages. Each package includes for a Singapore cab and a Malaysia cab for just S$70.

The Singapore taxi will pick up passengers from any one location here and drive them pass the custom to the bus terminal, where they would be transferred to the arranged Malaysia taxi. From there this taxi will transport you to the airport. Each taxi can only accomodate 4 pax.

It is very easy and safe. I will highly recommend you this friendly Singapore taxi driver Hendry, whom I think is very experienced or alternatively you can check out the shuttle service information at the Senai Airport's website.

At Mount Kinabalu, there is only one management for accomodations, which is Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. The accomodations cost about S$160 per pax, but I think the price may have increased, so go check its website. It includes 3 days & 2 nights of stay at the resthouses and meals. However, extra cash of around RM200 is advised to be brought, as there are other charges, like Park Entrance Fee lah~, Mountain Guide Fees lah~, Climbing Permit lah~, Insurance lah~ and Certificate lah~ that are to be paid at the mountain. Furthermore you may need to the money to essential items, food, equipments like gloves and laundry services, etc.

Below is the email of accomodation itinerary

Let me explain in details, in case this email is complicating. We stayed at Grace Hostel on 24 Feb and departed on 25 Feb morning for Laban Rata resthouses, where we were housed for one night and then we checked out on 26 Feb in afternoon.

Before we climbed, we met an angmoh guy on the first day at the Step-In Lodge in KK Town and he said it is too expensive to climb for a mountain in Southeast Asia... But what to do... Mount Timah so short and Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in ASEAN.

Guess Guess Guess - Audrey

Aaron, Jeremy and me had this belief that Audrey is an imaginative friend of Prema, until she showed us the picture below.

Can you guess which one is Audrey? Pls vote! Heh heh heh

Go Prema Go!

Dear KKKakis, I am proud to announce that Prema Devi is the most improved member!

She has been improving for recent trainings and yesterday she was able to scale 25 storey under 5mins and 40 secs 4 times!

A message to the rest: Don't slack, Prema is catching up on U!

Running cum Interview Show at MacRitchie Reservoir

Had a running workout with Jeremy and Mel at MacRitchie Reservoir yesterday.
I didn't bring my camera out, but luckily Mel did and she probably regretted letting me taking the pictures of her running.
If this workout is an interview session, it would be like this:

Jeremy: Good afternoon, you are listening to Running cum Interview Show on 9.38 Live with KKKakis Melissa Tan and myself Jeremy Koh.
Melissa: Hello!
J: So Miss Melissa Tan can you tell us why you decided to climb Mount KK.
M: Huh? I don't know lar. (panting)
J: What you mean you don't know?
M: Huh? I think eh... for personal achievement lor... (panting)
J: How do you find the training today?
M: (panting) Sad lar! I am being bullied by 2 idiotic guys, who are running ahead of me! (panting hard) Argh! Jeremy stop singing to me! And Qiyou stop taking pictures of me! (panting very hard)
J: Ahem, thank you Miss Melissa Tan for your exclusive interview. This is Jeremy Koh and you are listening to 9.38 Live.

Wall Climbing @ Climb Asia

Had my first wall climbing at Climb Asia on Tuesday and I am addicted to it.

Hope we have regular sessions there.

Enjoy the video by Wan Churn heh heh heh...

13 January 2008

Who is Audrey?

It was our second training last Friday and Audrey, Kelvin and Prema were absent.

We had a 10 minutes run at the TPY Stadium and Melissa was reluctant to run. She did run in the end, after she found out that the facilities booking office was closed. Hahahaha.

After which, we went to climb 3 x 25 flight of staircase at Blk 193. Grace was again the fastest, as at the third climb, I failed to catch up with her. This is despite after I increased my speed.

I thought it was fun this time, as we took pictures during our climb to show our tired expressions.

After the climb, we had dinner at MOS Burgers, where we also had some chit chats and snapshots against someone's wish =p

There is a big question mark on Audrey, as we wonder how she looks like? Think we should have a trekking trip soon, so that she can come along.

TGC - Transdermal Glucosamine Cream

If your knees hurt , due to wear and tear, then try this glucosamine medication.

This medication helps in regeneration of the knee cartilage and ligament and it is not to be taken orally. It can be bought at Guardian Pharmacy or Watson at a cost of around $30.

I have been using it on and off for 2 years and it helps in the recovery of my troublesome knees.

First Meeting

I dedicated this blog (my first) to the my fellow MountKK Kakis, Aaron, Audrey, Grace , Jeremy, Kelvin, Melissa, Prema and probably Annie.

I have never met all of them, except for Jeremy, but I haven seen him for about four years. Yesterday was our first meeting, less Audrey and Annie, and I have such feelings like blind dates and seeing my long-time-nv meet-friend. I also felt weird going on a trip with strangers. I think some of them have such feelings too.

So our only communications had always been email, sms and sometimes by phone, until yesterday.

We met up for our first training at Toa Payoh to scale the summits of some 40-storey flats. I made my journey to Toa Payoh from SP with my laptop and two sets of school notes in my backpack. It was heavy and I thought I got no choice but to climb with it, but lucky Grace let us put our things and changed our gears at her flat. Terima kasih Grace!

In all we scaled three X 40-storey staircases at two different HDB flats. Grace and Kelvin were the most enthusiastic and fastest, especially Grace, who was happy seeing those stairs. She reminded me of a hamster running the wheel non-stop and she like no kick lo~!

The rest of us were encouraging Prema most of the time. Take it easy on yourself Prema, treat it as a fun experience. With more conditioning, you would be much prepared. Each staircase took us approx. 10mins and I thought it was nothing compared to scaling MountKK for hours and hours and hours....
It reasonably easy for me, but i felt some pain at my left knee and its a recuring one.

Nonetheless I am motivated and looking forward to our next training together!
